Halloween Pumpkin Hunt

October can feel like a long month when you are waiting for Halloween to come. In addition to my other Halloween Activities, this Halloween Pumpkin Hunt can add fun anytime in October! And it’s easily adaptable for young kids, teens, or adults.

I bought these mini pumpkin trick-or-treat buckets. Yes, they are small – that’s the point! The buckets are big enough to fit a fun size candy. Coincidentally, they also work well for an 18” doll.

Pumpkin Hunt

How I used these could work for either kids or adults, just change what the treat is. For adults, I found that small liquor bottles (50ml) fit great! Also chapstick, Hot Wheels cars, Lego minifigures, any small toy that could fit in an Easter egg would work.

I hid the pumpkins around the yard. These pumpkins have little handles which gives more options for hanging them from trees or bushes.

Take advantage of how early it gets dark in October and have fun after dark!

When I did this activity I added a challenge by waiting until night to start. Then everyone had to use flashlights to hunt for the pumpkins in the dark. Searching around the yard for small pumpkins using flashlights is more challenging than it seems, especially when pumpkins are hanging from trees.

Variations on the Pumpkin Hunt

Hide small pumpkins (like the Jack Be Little size) around the yard. Collect them in a cauldron! These smaller pumpkins are great for little hands. Usually you can buy them pretty cheap in bags of 6 or 10.

Look through your Halloween decorations and see if you can hide different objects for each child. Spiders, skulls, pirate coins, pumpkins, and eyeballs are all good choices. Hiding a different thing for each person to find makes it easy to vary the difficulty based on the age and usually the kids get excited about helping each other.
