Nails and Spa Party

calm colors, nail polish, pearls will set the stage for a spa party

The middle school girls I know are all about skincare and pampering, which is why my daughter chose a Spa Party for her birthday this year. We still did a few crafts, and I snuck one game in, but the main event was manicures and pedicures.

The DIY projects we did were very simple and the girls were able to chat while they worked. All the activities gave them the ability to personalize what they made. Best of all, they took home what they made and I didn’t have to make extra treat bags!

Set the Mood

Throughout the party we had calming / relaxation music playing. Ocean sounds, spa music, relaxation music, etc. You could also use a sound machine to get a calming background.

DIY Lip Balm

There are many DIY’s out there for relaxation products – soaps, bath bombs, shower steamers – but generally they require a full day to set. I needed an option that was fast and customizable. Enter DIY Lip Balm!

Materials:

bring the spa home and make your own lip balm

Simplified Steps: Melt vaseline in the microwave (or crockpot), stir in kool aid packet, spoon into containers and let set for about 15-30 mins

Detailed Steps that I followed from a fellow blogger

A couple things I did to make the process easier:

  • Use a crockpot to melt a larger quantity of vaseline at once
  • While the vaseline was still liquid, use droppers to make transfer to containers less messy
  • Once the vaseline starts to set again, a spoon works great!

Decorating Flip Flops

Since the girls were getting pedicures, they needed to wear flip flops home. To make sure everyone had a pair, we bought flip flops for everyone and let them decorate them!

be spa ready with your own flip flops, expertly decorated

Materials:

This was a super easy method of decorating the flip flop straps. Just loop the hair tie around the strap and over the flower/bow to secure it.

I bought a variety of flower colors to give plenty of options. Seven to eight flowers fit on a single flip flop, so I bought 3 packs for 10 girls to use.

The girls really enjoyed creating different color schemes and they all turned out a little different.

Nail Polish Name Game

Nail polish usually has weird names and I made a game out of it!

I found 10 nail polish colors that had names which didn’t give away the color too obviously and were also appropriate (not risque or suggestive) for middle school girls. Each girl had a sheet with basic colors (e.g., red, blue, pink, purple, etc.) and they had a marker to show their guess.

I went onto a nail polish site, like Essie, to get nail polish names. The site helpfully grouped by color so I knew I’d have a variety.

I used mini nail polish bottles (3D printer design) as the marker or you can get small nail polish bottles, which the girls can take home.

Game Play: I would read the name of the nail polish and the girls would guess what color it was by placing their nail polish marker on a color square. Then I’d reveal the answer and show the picture of the nail polish color. The girls kept track of the score themselves. Highest score won!

All About the Nails

The girls got manicures and pedicures during the party. To make it easy on myself, I hired a mobile manicure company that came to the house and brought materials for both treatments.

Search for “mobile nail salon” would find any companies in your area.
