The Making Games badge incorporates different types of games – physical games, board games, scavenger hunts, etc. I have a variety of options available for Scavenger Hunts that could be used for this badge.
Below is a list of activities to meet the requirements for the Making Games badge. Find ideas for more Brownie badges here.
Look and Find
At the start of each meeting, we have a simple activity that the girls can work on while we wait for everyone to arrive. Sometimes it’s a coloring page or decorating their folders. For the Making Games badge the girls completed an outdoor-themed look and find page.
Relay Race
In small groups of five, the girls created their own relay race. Each girl determined how to get from one set of cones to another. Then the small group ran the whole course together.
Change a Game
One of the requirements for this badge is to change the rules to a game. The girls chose from different games they all knew already, like tag or duck, duck, goose. Then they decided what to change and played the new game. Some girls did a combination of freeze dance with tag or played tag and had to yell out something when you were tagged.
Make Your Own Games
I created a simple game board template. Then, I created a few examples to give them ideas of how to modify the template by adding bridges or shortcuts, turning it on its side, or making a theme for the game. Each girl in the troop had the same blank game board. Then, they each made their own board game by customizing the squares.
We also talked about what you could do if you didn’t have dice or pawns available. Flipping a coin to move forward one or two spaces, creating a spinner with a pencil and paperclip, or using small toys as pawns were all ideas the girls had.
